Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology
Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology -- have the 2 publishers involved changed what they are providing EBSCO?
That title switched publishers around 2006-2007, from Cambridge to Wiley. Previously I was still able to use the Cambridge link under "E-Journals from EBSCO" to access the earlier content and then use the Wiley link for the more current content. However, now the full text links from the EBSCO page under Cambridge only go to abstracts, not full articles. Actually I did reach a 2006 full text via that link, but the May 2004 and one I checked for 2002 only gave me abstracts.
When I try the Wiley link and go to the publisher site I randomly checked a few years and it seems I can get to full text all the way back into 1958.

We have online access to this title back through v.1, 1930. The EBSCO Open Access links take you there, or if you click on the publisher further into A to Z you can reach it. I am in the process of having the E-Journals from EBSCO corrected.
Occasional issues are only available in HTML. Not sure if that is a currency issue. Perhaps it will later switch to PDF.

APA new 6th edition -- helpful resources
The Alvin Sherman Library has been working on an APA (6th ed.) page with a number of How Do I Cite? videos: -- http://www.nova.edu/library/dils/lessons/apa/index.htm
(This is the main page with all the links.)
I should mention that this is still a work in progress, but we wanted to post it in time for the new
semester. These APA modules are generic rather than program specific so they
may also be useful in your institutions.
We have some general overview videos. They can also be helpful for students
who have trouble with just the basics and have trouble remembering to just
put a period after the parentheses enclosing the date of publication and
need visuals.
. Citing Sources (20-page handout) --
http://www.nova.edu/library/dils/teachinghandouts/apa/APA_6th_ed.pdf
. Assignments (5 min. 45 sec.) -- Title page, formatting of paper,
headings, reference page
http://www.nova.edu/library/dils/video/format_assignAPA6th/
. Text Citations (11 min.) -- Discussion of text citations, quotations,
paraphrasing, and plagiarism
http://www.nova.edu/library/dils/video/TextCitations6thed
. Article Citations (4 min. 15 sec.)
http://www.nova.edu/library/dils/video/FormatJournalArticle_APA6th/
. Book Citations (4 min.)
http://www.nova.edu/library/dils/video/FormatBookReferenceCitations_APA6thed
Especially for doctoral students who have more specialized needs, we also
have specialized videos for questions about how to handle various scenarios.
The reference components may be helpful because each module looks in depth
at one specific element of the citation (authors/editors, date of
publication, titles, publication information, and electronic sources). For
example, the module on authors/editors look at formatting author information
in the text and reference citations for one author, two authors, six
authors, eight authors (with ellipses), no author, corporate authors,
anonymous, editors, compound initials, and suffixes like Jr. and III. (See
http://www.nova.edu/library/help/video/apa/apa_advanced/authors_apa/index.ht
m )
You are all welcome to share these resources with anyone you like. If you
have any suggestions or comments, let me know. Thanks,
Johanna Tunon

HCPro has changed its website. It still works fine, just lots more white space to scroll through.
When you follow a newsletter link from our web-based journal list you will need to scroll down to the very bottom of the HCPro page to reach the newsletter. EBSCO has announced that as of March 31, 2009, the content we currently access in Pre-CINAHL will be merged into CINAHL to streamline the search process. The MEDLINE database is already handled that way.

Developmental Disabilities Research Reviews is new title for Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Reviews
This title has recently changed its name. Our access via the publisher if you are on campus is 1996 - the current issue.
Reading tables of contents
If you would like to receive table of content alerts for some journal titles directly to your email you can set an email alert via the publisher. However, a method that I would suggest is the RSS feed option you will often see in the same place. If you use a "feed reader" such as the free Google Reader ( www.google.com/reader ) you can just go to a single website when you want to catch up on your reading. When you log in you will see neatly gathered the links to the titles, websites, etc. that you have set up with an indication of the new content that has been posted to that site. You can even group them by topic. To reach our full text online content from those links you would need to be accessing it from a hospital computer though.

Journal of Children's Orthopaedics
5-21-08: however, we only get online access to the current year! I am investigating to see what the cost is for archival access. This does not seem to match their goals of "affordable and readable" access to global medicine.
10-11-07: We now have access to a new title, Journal of Children's Orthopaedics, which began in 2007.

Journal of Hand Surgery -- now "European," not "British"
As of their 2007 issues the British and European edition of the Journal of Hand Surgery is no longer the "British" edition. It will be called the "European" edition and therefore instead of being v.32B it is v.32E.

Elsevier online titles
We have online access to Applied Nursing Research and Journal of Pediatric Nursing through Elsevier, which took over these titles as of 2008. However, A to Z does not show online access to either so I need to determine if it can be added.
Joint Commission titles
5-19-08: See the July 9, 2007 post for links to our titles. However, today we no longer have access as far back on The Source, Environment of Care News and Benchmark. I have written Joint Commission, IngentaConnect and EBSCO to try to straighten this out. These titles will not be available on our A to Z listing because they are single user titles.
Benchmark's page says archives are available via IngentaConnect, but currently they just do not work.

The HCPro titles are not all showing up correctly on our new A to Z online journal list. I am in the process of getting the links corrected. You can still access them through the link in the post from March, 2007 and from the table on the "web-based journal" link if you scroll down that page. Contact me for the password.
Also, they have a publication called Briefings on Hospital Safety that they seem to also refer to as Hospital Safety Center. The publication itself is the Briefings title though.

OVID statistical reports
re getting stats from OVID now that they are on SP (as reported by comments on listserv CDPLUS-L):
OVID reports that their intent is to maintain the Gateway-module until the SP-module has
the same capabilities for statistical reports. Until then, the Gateway-module is the one to use.
The new version has a longer timeout so possibly fewer users can get in
At present, the Gateway-module is reporting the reliable data. The SP module, by contrast, is reporting only partially the same activity.
Feb 2008 was a short month not only due to the number of days but also because the Gateway to SP change occurred.
Reports can be accessed directly from within the statistics program (rather than from email). They appear under "completed reports" up in the left hand corner under "welcome." Make sure that you have "all content" checked in the pull down menu under "report scope."
The SP module e-mails you a link to their server when a given report is ready. This link is to a zipped (.zip) format file, which you, in turn, unzip to view two "comma-delimited" text files.

This title is available online via OVID for most of 1976 through 2007, all in pdf format now. Number 115, 1976, is in pdf while number 114, 1976, is not yet available to us in that format.
This title is known by several names and abbreviations: Clinical Orthopaedics, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, Clin Orthop, CORR, Clin Orthop Relat Res. They are all the same. In 2008 it moved to a new publisher, Springer, so the 2008 issues are not available through OVID.

Effective January 1, 2008, Sage Publications will act as the Hammill Institute on Disabilities' representative regarding subscriptions to Journal of Learning Disabilities, formerly from Pro-Ed. More problems accessing. EBSCO reports:
Due to the way JAMA's site is setup, when you display your End User Access Notes in a frame at the top of the publisher's site, you must have your browser set to always accept Session Cookies. The steps to do this will vary based on your internet browser type and version, and depending on your institution's network settings, you may need to contact your IT department to have this done.An alternative to the above is to have the End User Access Note display as a pop-up rather than in a frame. These should be working now. Password IS required, and we have 3 password accounts activated. You will see the correct ones when you reach the title (it will take me a while to get the main page updated). If it doesn't work, maybe someone is using that password so try another. The second half of the password is the same for all.
Please let me know if you still have any problems. mp

Some staff report they are unable to access online text at their desk for these titles from AMA. However, they are accessible in the Medical Library. I am working on discovering the problem. If you are able to reach one of these at your desk I would be interested in knowing that.
but I changed it and still have problems.
If you have problems accessing, try using the passwords (found via library website) at the site directly:

More problems accessing. EBSCO reports:
Due to the way JAMA's site is setup, when you display your End User Access Notes in a frame at the top of the publisher's site, you must have your browser set to always accept Session Cookies. The steps to do this will vary based on your internet browser type and version, and depending on your institution's network settings, you may need to contact your IT department to have this done.An alternative to the above is to have the End User Access Note display as a pop-up rather than in a frame. This can be done by selecting the option 'Open end user access note in a popup window' towards the bottom of the Notes section in Registration Tracker.

A to Z List of Online Journal Access
We are testing a new service from EBSCO that lists all our online journal access in one "A to Z" list. I am still in the process of setting it up, so it is not yet complete. For remote access contact the librarian for passwords. Although this will enable you to see the list, most titles can really only be reached from on campus.

Journal of Hand Surgery
12-14-06 This title is a problem for those of you who use our custom PubMed link and click on the "online" icon. We do in fact have online access to the title, and that link tells you so. However, this is one where you will actually need to get to the online access via the library's web-based journal page. The reason is you need a password and that is only way I have to let you know the password.

OVID journals
9-07: we do have access for 3 users now.
11-22-06
question:
whenever I click on the link to "online" from PubMed, if the article is through OVID (like JPO) I get a reply that says "the fulltext article could not be found."I can access it by going to the online JPO through the library homepage, but it takes much longer to find the article.
reply:
I will work on that to see if it can be changed. Thanks for letting me know. I'm glad you know how to get to it from the web-based journals list though. We only have 1 user at a time, so be sure to log off in between.

Evidence-Based Child Health: A Cochrane Review Journal
We now have at least temporary access to Evidence-Based Child Health: A Cochrane Review Journal and it should be active within the institution. Full text links on PubMed
If you like to search MEDLINE on PubMed, use this link so that you will be able to see what we have in the hospital
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=txudtslib
You can search that same link from home or anywhere in the world.
Here is a sample citation to show you what to expect. Go to the link above and type in
15599283
Then click to see the abstract version and you will see links for the TSRHC library journals, both shelved and online versions. Sometimes you can actually click through to the full text available at TSRHC. Other times you will need to return to the library's web-based journals page.
A similar link is available that shows TSRHC and UTSW titles. You will NOT be able to access UTSW journals, this is just so you can find out what they have. See the link at the TSRHC Medical Library website under databases - medical or contact the librarian.

We have now added JPO Part B to our list of online journal content. It is available back to 2001. If articles do not show up automatically when you do a search, go to the library's web-based journals page

to access it and let me know so I can work on it.
Please be sure to logoff when you have finished printing your article as we have a very limited amount of access and if you forget to logoff you may inconvenience another user.

Sage Journals free through Oct. 31.
Until October 31, journals from Sage Publications are free online to institutions that subscribe to even one title in celebration of their 40th anniversary and their 1st anniversary of being online.
http://online.sagepub.com/
At their website you can search by topic or title. Topics include pediatrics, nursing, neuroscience, education, psychology, sociology, research methods, rehabilitation medicine, surgery, radiology and computer science among others. You can even see a list of the "most read" articles in particular journals. A good time to sample some titles.
We are able to access these titles due to our subscriptions to Journal of Transcultural Nursing and also Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair.

Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics
9-12-05: It has come to my attention that a search done in EBSCO MEDLINE will show a full text link to JPO for a 2002 article but not for a 2004 article. However, when you click along to OVID to reach the full text it asks for a password. That is not right, so I am checking with EBSCO. Please print JPO articles (and SPINE and CORR) through the Web-based Journals list at the Medical Library website. Be sure you log out when you have printed your article. Sorry for the inconvenience.

8-17-05: While our actual subscription only includes about a year's worth of online access, I've just discovered that our database subscription provides free pdf full text all the way back to v.1, 1930 and no waiting a year to see current issues either! Scroll down to the bottom A-C listing for now, but I will update the webpage soon. mp

The Lancet
Although we do not receive a print subscription to The Lancet, we actually do have online access!
We get it as part of a full text database. If you go to the Web-based Journals page of the Medical Library website and scroll down in the list of titles, you will see the link.
http://tsrhkids/mlibrary/web-based.htm
1991-1998 is just in html format, but after that it is the nice pdf version that prints so well.
If you would like to set up an email journal alert to hear about new issues you can use the My EBSCOhost feature. Click on "Journal Alert" and you will be led to set up the account. They will not send you any bothersome email, but there you can manage the table of contents alerts you wish to receive. You can also use this feature to save searches you like to run regularly.

"Archiv Orthop"
(We do not offer "free" online access to these titles, but articles can be obtained for you if needed.)
This is a tricky abbreviation. It can stand for a German, Italian or American title! Plus the voluming is similar in some older years.
German and English-language: (Note from rep at Springer, the company that now handles full text content for the English and German title) "The current title of 'Archiv fur Orthopadische und Unfall-chirurgie' is : Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery (Historical Archive) http://www.springerlink.com/openurl.asp?genre=journal&issn=0936-8051&target=archive and under the historical archive of this current title the content of the predecessors of this journal can be found. In future also the former journal titles will be searchable. Currently all tables of content and abstract of the historic content that is already available can be viewed." ISSN 0003-9330
Italian: the title is Archivio di Ortopedia ISSN 0004-0118

Today I discovered that there is a 12 month "embargo" on some of the Scandinavian journals we access through the A-Z listings at the bottom of the Web-based Journals link. That means we can get them in full text online after 12 months. I'll be updating that information on the website soon.
